Your photos are your storefront. Here's how to take product shots that actually sell.
Your photos are the single biggest factor in whether a buyer clicks on your listing. Studies show that listings with clear, well-lit photos sell faster and at higher prices than identical items with poor photos. Good photos also reduce returns — buyers know exactly what they're getting.
A modern smartphone is genuinely adequate for reseller photography. The cameras in current iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones produce excellent results with proper lighting. If you want to step up, a basic DSLR or mirrorless camera with a kit lens will give you more control, but it's not necessary to start.
Natural light is your best friend. Photograph near a large window during daylight hours. Avoid direct sunlight (creates harsh shadows) — overcast days or indirect light produce the most flattering results. If natural light isn't available, two cheap softbox lights ($50-80 for a pair) create consistent, professional-looking results.
eBay buyers expect clean, informative photos on white or neutral backgrounds. Depop buyers prefer lifestyle and editorial-style photography. Match your style to your platform. Show defects honestly on both — transparency builds trust. Photography equipment is a deductible business expense. See our guides for Depop sellers and eBay sellers.
