Most 'free' accounting tools have significant limitations. Here's an honest look at your free and low-cost options.
Truly free options for Australian resellers are limited: Wave offers free accounting (but no AU bank feeds or platform imports), Google Sheets is free and flexible (but entirely manual), and some accounting tools offer limited free tiers with severe restrictions on transaction volume or features.
Xero, MYOB, and QuickBooks all offer free trials (usually 30 days) followed by paid plans. These trials let you evaluate the software, but don't count on them as a permanent solution. Some tools offer perpetually free plans that are capped at a few transactions per month — useful for the most casual sellers but inadequate for anyone doing real volume.
Free tools cost you time. Manual data entry into Wave or spreadsheets at 20+ sales per month adds up to hours of work that paid software would automate. Errors in manual entry can lead to incorrect tax returns and ATO issues. And the stress of tax season with inadequate records has a real psychological cost.
For serious resellers, the question isn't "can I find free software?" but "what's the cheapest tool that actually meets my needs?" See our Wave review and full software comparison.
